What is whiplash?
Simply put, whiplash is a neck sprain most commonly caused by a car crash/accident.
There are more whiplash injuries in the UK each year than in any other European country.
Symptoms
Symptoms of whiplash include:
Neck pain
Neck stiffness (making turning or bending the neck difficult)
Shoulder pain
Arm pain
Headache
Blurred vision
Nausea
Pain when swallowing (this generally passes quickly)
Difficulty concentrating
Mood disorders (depression, irritability…)
Note: Where whiplash is particularly severe, there may be some damage to the spinal cord.
Causes
Where whiplash occurs as a result of a car crash/accident, general causes include:
Sudden breaking, swerving or turning right or left in your car
Being hit from behind, or from the front or side by another vehicle
Not keeping a safe distance from the car in front (this is sometimes called tailgating) and then crashing into it when it breaks/stops suddenly
For whiplash injuries to occur, you do not have to have been in a serious car accident or to have crashed at high speed. Sometimes, even the smallest of accidents can cause severe whiplash.
Not all whiplash injuries occur as a result of the aforementioned causes. Sometimes whiplash neck sprain can be caused by falling down stairs or tripping for some reason.
Effect on your life
If you suffer a whiplash injury, refrain from driving until your symptoms have completely cleared up.
Many people who suffer a whiplash injury choose to review their driving style during and after their recovery, and vow to drive more safely in future.
Note: Some cases of whiplash can result in permanent disability.
Treatment
The vast majority of cases of whiplash require no actual treatment – the symptoms gradually ease with time.
Where symptoms/injuries are particularly severe, neck surgery may be required.
