What is vaginal thrush?
A yeast called Candida causes vaginal thrush. Women with the condition have a creamy white, watery discharge from the vagina which can be uncomfortable as well as inconvenient.
The good news is that vaginal thrush can be easily treated with over-the-counter remedies from your pharmacy. These treatments are generally very effective and can help clear symptoms quickly.
Symptoms
Symptoms of vaginal thrush can include:
an odourless creamy white discharge (a bit like cottage cheese) that can also be watery
itchiness
redness
abdominal pain
pain, redness, swelling and cracked skin around the vulva (the area outside of the vagina)
pain when passing urine
discomfort during sex
infection around the anus, where sweat collects in the folds of the skin
Note: In rare cases, some people also develop sores around the area where the vulva is swollen.
Causes
Vaginal thrush is caused by:
being pregnant
certain antibiotics
tight clothing which prevent natural ventilation
vaginal cosmetics such as deodorants or bath products
being diabetic
having chemotherapy treatment
the contraceptive pill, and
allergic reactions to condoms
Vaginal thrush can also be caused by dietary factors, such as: an excessive caffeine intake, wheat (yeast in bread), alcohol and dairy.
Diagnosis
Most cases of vaginal thrush are self-diagnosed. However, if you are suffering from the aforementioned symptoms and want a confirmed diagnosis, arrange to see your GP. After taking your medical history, he or she will assess your condition by asking you some questions about your symptoms. If you have been treating vaginal thrush yourself but find it keeps coming back, your GP may take a sample of your vaginal secretion for tests (by using a swab). Your sample will be examined in a laboratory to see if your secretion contains yeast.
Treatment
Most women treat vaginal thrush with an over-the-counter remedy. However, prescribed treatments from your GP can include:
a short course of antifungal tablets
intravaginal creams
intravaginal pessaries (small tablets that are inserted into the vagina)
