What is bronchitis?
Bronchitis is basically an unpleasant and irritating chest condition that affects your breathing. It is like have a heavy, chesty cough which fails to pass over just a couple days as a normal cough would.
You can either have acute bronchitis (which is short-lived) and usually stems from having a cold of the flu, or chronic bronchitis which, in most cases, develops as a result of prolonged exposure to certain irritants and is something you will have to cope with for two or three months each year (usually over the winter period.)
Symptoms
Symptoms of bronchitis include:
cough
sore throat
blocked nose
wheezing
a yellow-grey coloured mucus (sputum) brought up through the throat
tightness in the chest
headaches
aches and pains
fever and chills
Causes
Acute bronchitis occurs when the mucous membranes of the bronchi become inflamed. This can be as a direct result of having a cold or the flu – acute viral illnesses.
With chronic bronchitis, the condition usually results from inhaling irritants like cigarette smoke, gases and harmful atmospheric substances in the work environment, or through inhaling air pollution over a long period of time. This damages the airways that carry airflow through the trachea to your lungs.
Diagnosis
If you are suffering from the aforementioned symptoms and feel you may have developed bronchitis, arrange an appointment with your GP as soon as possible. After taking your medical history, he or she will ask your some questions about your symptoms, carry out a short physical examination by listening to your chest using a stethoscope, and then recommend an appropriate treatment.
Treatment
You will probably be able to treat your condition yourself by using over-the-counter remedies and getting plenty of rest. If this does not prove successful, your GP will prescribe a five-day course of antibiotics.
