Top 15 Video Interviewing Tips
Employers are now using video interviews to help them whittle down the huge number of applicants to a manageably small number for face-to-face interviews. Video interviewing can be an extremely cost effective way of screening shortlisted candidates for interview, without all the travel and venue costs of seeing everyone in person. If using video interview software is to be part of the application process for a job that you really want, then these top 15 tips will help you make the right first impression.
(1) Put as much planning and preparation into a video interview as you would for a face-to-face interview.
(2) Gather all the materials you will need well in advance.
(3) Dress from head to foot in professional interview attire (normally a suit).
(4) For creative jobs, you may wish to show personality. If this is the case, choose strong colours that will contrast well with the background, but avoid fussy or repetitive patterns as these may be distracting.
(5) Don't wear clothes that match your skin tone as you could either disappear into the background or appear naked!
(6) If the video interview requires you to travel, plan to arrive early.
(7) Make sure you understand how to use the video interview software and IT equipment before you start. If you're not sure, ask.
(8) As you will only be seen in 2D, consider how you are placed in front of the camera and ensure the interviewer can see your face properly.
(9) Clear the table or desk around you, as well as anything messy in the background.
(10) Avoid fiddling and be conscious of any habits you have such as chewing your nails or flicking your hair. The movement will be distracting and may be viewed as nervousness or a lack of confidence.
(11) Don't rustle, tap or play with anything around the microphone as small sounds can be picked up and amplified by the video interviewing software.
(12) A lack of eye contact can come across as shyness or (worse) insincerity and lying, so make lots of eye contact to build trust between you and the interviewer.
(13) Smile! It's easy to forget when you are concentrating on what you are saying, but don't forget to smile and use facial expressions in the same way you would when talking to someone face to face.
(14) Use the Picture-in-Picture feature so you can see how you appear.
(15) Don't forget to prepare questions for the interviewer too, as you would for a normal interview.
