Eco art – the expression of a better world

“Eco art” or “ecological art” is a concept that reflects a form of environmental art. It was created by artists deeply concerned about global and local environmental situations. These artists tend to bring art making to a more functional format. The number of artists embracing this form of art is growing fast around the world. There is a connection between the terms “recycled art”, “upcycling art” and “ecological art”. They all refer to a better relationship with the environment in the sense of protecting it. In fact, all these terms have the meaning of bringing a tribute to the planet.

Maybe the basic concept of eco art, as well as upcycling art, is the way the relationship between the human being and the natural world can be improved through visual experience and its related products. This functional concept of the art-environment relation may take several forms, like education, negotiation, advocacy, and action.

As parts of the larger category of the environmental art, both eco art and upcycling art involve some site-specific creations, which in most cases are ephemeral, and require the collaboration of the artists with other categories, such as educators, scientists and community groups. All these forms of environmental art interpret nature and create artworks meant to inform people and raise their awareness about the processes that happen in nature, as well as about the environmental problems humans face now. They are concerned with forces and materials related to the environment and revise the relationship between man and nature by bringing into discussion new ways of co-existence of people and their local environments. They are also supposed to restore damaged environments in an artistic way.

Eco art is addressed to both the mind and the heart of the people. It may help broaden intellectual understanding, advocate political action, address core values, and trigger an intuitive appreciation of what the environment is. The main goals this type of art was created for are to communicate, to improve dialogue, and to help social transformation.

It is possible that a work of art focuses on several aspects like clarifying the structure of an ecosystem, studying a particular type of relationship, interacting with an entity or involving in restoring a damaged environment. A work of art may explore, but also try to heal some aspects of the environment neglected by humans or even unnoticed by them. Such works of art are meant to undermine the viewers’ prejudices and at the same time encourage them to take action and change their behaviour. Eco art and upcycling art often use metaphors like key elements. Metaphors are expected to outline existing patterns and to provoke new ways of interaction.

They are all forms of the same modern tendency of giving nature the primordial role it always deserved.
