Will I Get Relief From Chronic Diarrhea?
Diarrhea is a disorder that occurs when the food we eat passes out too quickly or too large in amount or both via colon. The job of colon is to absorb liquids from the food we eat, leaving behind semi-solid feces. But in case when these liquids aren't absorbed, there occurs a watery excretion.
There are 3 types of diarrhea - acute, persistent and chronic diarrhea. Diarrhea that lasts less than 2 weeks is known as acute diarrhea. Diarrhea which lasts more than 2 weeks but less than 4 weeks is termed as persistent diarrhea. Chronic diarrhea occurs more than 4 weeks.
Acute diarrhea is the most common type of diarrhea that is faced by most of the world population at some point in their life. Diarrhea is a major cause of children deaths less than 4 years old in the developing countries.
Common symptoms of diarrhea in the combination of any of the following include dehydration, nausea, vomiting, bloating, cramping, abdominal pain, urgency to empty the bowels, incontinence and fever.
Causes of diarrhea:
1. Bacteria, viruses and parasites: Food kept outside without refrigeration for long causes rot or contamination that can transmit various microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and parasites in the body.
2. Medications: Many medications prescribed to treat some disease can lead to diarrhea as their side effect. The most common medication is antibiotics. Antibiotics have the ability to wipe off both bad and good bacteria. This leads to disturbance in the natural balance of those bacteria in our intestines. This disturbance sometimes also causes diarrhea.
3. Fructose or artificial sweeteners: Fructose is a type of sugar present naturally in honey and fruits and is added in some beverages as a sweetener. This may lead to diarrhea in some people who have difficulty in digesting it. Artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol and mannitol found in things like jams, juices, chewing gum or any other sugar free products can cause diarrhea if consumed more than necessary.
4. Lactose intolerance (allergy): Lactose is a type of sugar naturally found in milk and its products. People suffering from lactose intolerance face troubles in digesting lactose and usually experience diarrhea.
5. Surgery: Surgeries like abdominal or gallbladder removal surgery may lead to diarrhea to some people.
Diarrhea relieving diet: People suffering from diarrhea are often suggested to eat foods like oats, boiled potatoes, toasts, bananas, plain rice, rice water or baked chicken without fats or skin. Yogurt also helps in promoting the ‘good’ bacteria which improves the digestion.
Avoid things like spicy foods, beans, broccoli, chocolates, caffeinated drinks, cabbage, cauliflower, diet sodas or any other sugar free items; and dairy products, yogurt being the exceptional.
