ESTABLISH YOUR WHY

One of the critical steps to maintaining lofty fitness goals is to establish your WHY. It seems simple, but having a clear WHY can be one of your most powerful tools on the days that showing up for your workout seems impossible. Your WHY is what drives you, what motivates you, your reason behind the goal. Having a meaningful and personal WHY will help you stay focused on your goal and give you strength to push through.
To identify your WHY, ask yourself:
• How is this adding value to myself or others?
• What are my personal strengths?
• What am I passionate about?
• How do I measure success in my life?
• Why does this goal matter to me?
Knowing your WHY will give your fitness time a sense of purpose and make it easier to show up every day! Having a clear sense of purpose is also attractive to others, so that’s a perk!
For me, my WHY centers on having an independent life. I’ve seen close up what a sedentary lifestyle and consistently poor eating habits does to a person’s independence. Chronic health conditions rob a person of their independence, and once it’s lost, it’s very difficult to regain. I want my children to live their life and build their families when they are in their thirties, not losing their independence by becoming pre-mature caregivers to chronically ill parents. I want the independence to travel, be active, drive, continue to reach fitness goals, and be active for my grandchildren one day. My WHY gives me the motivation to make the difficult choice to show up, push play on my workout program, and choose the healthier food options more than 80% of the time. Let’s face it, sometimes in life you just have to choose the cake!
Getting a handle early on with your WHY will help break the cycle that plagues so many, and used to plaque myself as well. The cycle of starting healthy goals and then stopping them once life gets in the way, or the excuse gets too big to push past it. One of my favorite quotes from trainer Autumn Calabrese from 21 Day Fix is “If you are tired of starting over, stop giving up!” It’s true. With the power of a strong WHY behind you, the desire to give up becomes less and less.
So tell me, what’s your WHY? I can’t wait to read your stories!
