How to Make a Matcha Latte
Matcha is a powdered green tea made by grinding high-quality tea leaves. Although the process of making and consuming powdered green tea was first developed in China centuries ago, it was in Japan that it was refined into a true art form. Even today, Japanese matcha is considered the finest, with the Ceremonial Grade (Matcha Gold) traditionally reserved for prestigious tea ceremonies.
In recent years, the use of matcha has soared in popularity thanks to its distinctive flavour and wide-ranging health benefits. From shots and lattes to teas and desserts, matcha can now be found everywhere from health food shops to cafés. With that in mind, here’s a wonderful recipe for a Matcha Latte that can be enjoyed hot or cold.
Because matcha contains the nutrients of the entire tea leaf, it delivers more caffeine and antioxidants than are typically found in other green teas. Studies suggest that its natural compounds may help support liver function, promote heart health, and even assist with weight management.
So, what are you waiting for? Here’s a simple recipe to make a delicious Matcha Latte at home. You can use either our Matcha Silver or our Organic Matcha for this.
Ingredients
• 1 tsp matcha green tea powder
• Sweetener to taste
• 3 tbsp warm water
• 250ml cold milk or 300ml hot milk (for vegans, use a barista-style plant milk of your choice)
Method
1. Spoon the matcha and sweetener (if using) into a mug or cup.
2. Add the warm water and stir until it forms a smooth, dark green paste with no lumps.
3. Warm the milk in a small saucepan and pour into the mug until nearly full. Use cold milk if you make an iced latte.
4. Whisk the paste and milk together until it is frothy and smooth.
5. If you wish, add a light sprinkle of matcha powder on top for decoration. For an extra-refreshing iced version, simply add plenty of ice.
