Goals and objectives are an essential part of any business plan. These are verbal or written declarations of what the organization intends to achieve both in the short term and long term. In most circumstances, goals and objectives are used as if they are synonyms. However there is a difference between the two terms. A goal can be described as the long term aim of the organization. On the other hand, objectives are the specific steps that must be followed if the goals are to be realized.

There is a tremendous difference between having a good business idea and putting that idea into action. It would be impossible for the organization to achieve its aim if it does not identify the goals that it must seek. If you have established a good business idea, the following steps would help to convert these ideas into business success.

Do you have a good mission?
The company's mission will help to create relevant goals and objectives. Identify all the goals and objectives that are relevant to the realization of the organizations mission. List all the goals appropriately for example by using bullet points. Ensure that these goals are relevant to target population and also that it captures what the population expects from your organization.

Ensure that all the listed goals match with the organization's mission. Analyze the listed goals and try to come up with three to five goals that are; measurable, specific, realistic, timely and actionable (SMART goals). It is important to note that it would be difficult to work with too many goals at a time. For this reason, it is important to establish the ones that will have major impacts on your organization. An organization could have such goals as; to increase the market share by 30% by June 2013, to cut down on overhead cost by 20 in two years and so on. Make sure that you have the resources to support the goals that you have selected to work on.

Come up with objectives that will see to it that goals are realized.
The hardest part is always coming up with the goals. Once you have the goals in place, it is now appropriate to come up with the steps that will be used to ensure that the goals are met within the stipulated time. It would be important to rank these objectives in terms of priority. It is important to note that the process of achieving goals and objectives is slow and not all the goals will be achieved within the set time frame. It is important to be patient as you do all that it takes to achieve the goals.

Assess the resources needed to realize the goals and objectives
The whole process of setting up goals and designing objectives will not bear any meaning if your organization lacks the resources to run them. Consider each of the goals and objectives at a time to determine all the resources that are required. Ensure that enough resources are devoted to this strategy. It would be important to seek external help if your organization lacks some of the resources
