Mobile Phones In India : A overview

The Indian mobile market is growing by double digits year on year. Sales figures are predicted to touch $ 63 billion dollars this year. But things were not the same always. Until the last decade, mobile phones in India were a luxury. Lack of manufacturers, service providers and tall asking prices made mobiles the prerogative of the rich.

What can be termed as phenomenal, the Indian mobile market has been increasing at a steady 40% every year. The numbers began growing with the introduction of foreign manufacturers and service providers, most notably the South Korean mobile manufacturer LG in 1997. This period can be called the golden age of mobile phones in India. The period that preceded was not less in any matter and it was during this period that the ground was laid for the glorious period of mobile phones in India.

The Early Days

The eastern city of Kolkata in West Bengal has played a significant role in telecommunications in India. It was in Kolkata (then Calcutta) where the first telegraph lines were laid and this was the very city that routed the first mobile call in the country. Since then the country has never looked back. The first telecom service provider in the country was Modi Telestra, currently there are 9 different telecom companies serving the growing demand of data and voice needs of the people.

Open Markets and Inflow of Foreign Brands

Another remarkable aspect of latest mobile phones in India is the open markets which levels the playing field for all manufacturers. Though the openness and subsequent inundation of low quality mobile companies have drawn flak from different quarters, this has also allowed reputed international like LG, Samsung, Nokia, HTC and Apple to name a few.

No Indian manufacturer has succeeded in making any dent in the mobile market scene since the beginning. For about a decade Nokia, the Finnish manufacturer has been the undisputed leader. Only recently, South Korean phone manufacturers like Samsung have managed to decidedly unseat Nokia from its throne.

The Rise of Brand Conscious Consumer

Very remarkably, a large section of the Indian consumer has become brand and quality conscious thus raising the overall quality of mobile phones in India. Increase in exposure to international brands has taught the average consumer a thing or two about quality devices.

This does not necessarily remove the low-end consumer from the scene, but the growing awareness has brought a fresh whiff of high end mobile devices into the Indian market.

Expected Evolutionary Changes in the Days Ahead

Data consumption has taken the centre spot recently and voice seems to have taken the backseat. To satiate the demand for faster, internet enabled devices manufacturers like LG has introduced new technologies like LTE and wi-fi. As we move forward, we will see more improvements in mobile phones in India, particularly in the smart phone segment.
