Upper Dolpo Trekking – Explore The Most Isolated Western Part Of Nepal

Hiking in Nepal’s far western Upper Dolpo province takes travelers into the most isolated regions of the grand Himalayas. Trip to Dolpo can be demanding as the sightseeing infrastructure here’s nearly non-existent, and organized trips are required. But the rewards you’ll get worth it – as you will experience Tibetan Buddhist culture, the incredible Lake Phoksundo, some of the ancient monasteries in Nepal and a real sense of being in extreme wilderness.

Some of the major highlights of Upper Dolpo trekking included:

• Hike through some regions of Nepal that not many tourists explored
• Witness snow leopards in the Shey Phoksundo National Park, which is one of the highest wild animal concentration parks in the planet.
• Glance over the serene water of Lake Phoksundo.
• Explore Shey Gompa, an 800 years old monastery at the bottom of Crystal Mountain.
• See the sprint chase for yarchagumba – a strange caterpillar fungus highly sought after due to its medicinal attributes.

Overview of Upper Dolpo trekking:

Hiking in Nepal’s Dolpo province allows tourists to explore the splendor of Nepal’s remote and rugged far west. Dolpo borders Tibet, where the culture & much of the countryside is reminiscent of its northern neighbor. The west part of the province is home to the She-Phoksundo National Park, which’s Nepal’s biggest.

Apart from being isolated, Western Nepal is also underdeveloped & pretty poor. Sightseeing infrastructure in Dolpo isn’t what it’s in most other areas in Nepal, and it’s essential to camp & carry your own food sources. Permits are costly, and you can’t hike in Upper Dolpo individually.

Nevertheless the deep gorges, high passes & peaks, the calm Lake Phoksundo, the 800 years old old Shey Monastery and some uncommon wildlife – encompassing the mysterious snow leopard – reward keen trekkers who come here.

Permits and regulations:

Permits for Upper Dolpo are expensive and strictly enforced. You also need to purchase a permit for Lower Dolpo, which you pass through on your way to Upper Dolpo. On top of that, only 250 foreigners are permitted to enter Upper Dolpo each year.

Lower Dolpo: $10 USD per week
Upper Dolpo: $50 USD per day (10-day minimum)

There is also an Rs. 1000 entry fee to the Shey-Phoksundo National Park. As it’s mandatory to trek with a guide on an organised tour in Upper Dolpo, your tour operator will arrange all permits and these fees are generally included in the total cost of your trip.

Be it Annapurna trekking or Upper Dolpo trekking, Nepal has something for the keen trekkers. If you are adventure enough, then you must give Nepal trekking a try.
